The engagement rate is average likes plus average comments, divided by followers, shown as a percentage with one decimal.

  3. 3

    Compare it

See where the rate sits against the typical range for accounts of that size and, after Fill in, how each recent post did.

How the engagement rate is calculated

Engagement rate = (average likes per post + average comments per post) ÷ followers × 100. For example, an account with 12,000 followers, 300 average likes, and 12 average comments has a rate of (300 + 12) ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 2.6%.

Fill in reads up to the 12 most recent posts on the public profile grid, including pinned posts, and averages the ones with visible like counts. At least 4 such posts are needed, so a single viral or quiet post cannot decide the result. Saves, shares, reach, and Reel views are not public, so they are not part of the rate.

The typical range is a reference band for each account size, the same bands our Chrome extension shows: 4–7% for nano accounts (under 10K followers), 2–4.5% for micro (10K to 100K), 1.5–3% for mid-tier (100K to 500K), 1.2–2% for macro (500K to 1M), and 0.8–1.5% for mega accounts (1M or more). Use it as a rough guide, not as a measured industry average.

A few useful answers

How do you calculate an Instagram engagement rate?

Add the average likes and the average comments per post, divide by the number of followers, and multiply by 100. With 12,000 followers, 300 average likes, and 12 average comments, the rate is (300 + 12) ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 2.6%.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on account size, because smaller audiences usually engage at higher rates. As a rough guide we use 4–7% for nano accounts (under 10K followers), 2–4.5% for micro (10K to 100K), 1.5–3% for mid-tier (100K to 500K), 1.2–2% for macro (500K to 1M), and 0.8–1.5% for mega accounts. These are the same reference bands as our Chrome extension, not a measured industry average, so compare accounts of a similar size and niche.

Which posts does Fill in use?

Up to the 12 most recent posts on the public profile grid, including pinned posts, in the order Instagram shows them. Posts with hidden like counts are skipped, and at least 4 posts with visible likes are needed for a rate.

Why are views, saves, and shares not included?

Instagram does not show saves, shares, or reach publicly, and Reel views measure something different from likes and comments. Using public likes and comments keeps rates comparable between accounts, the same way our Chrome extension measures engagement on instagram.com.

Can I calculate the engagement rate of a private account?

Fill in only works for public accounts. For your own private account, type your follower count and your average likes and comments into the calculator; that part runs in your browser.

Are the numbers I type sent anywhere?

No. Typed numbers are calculated in your browser and are not sent to our server. Fill in sends the username to our server to read public counts, and keeps the result for about 10 minutes so repeat lookups are faster.
