Newer export · your most recent one
Choose the ZIPDrop the ZIP or its JSON files
Both files are read on this device and never uploaded. Use two exports of the same account, each requested as JSON with “Followers and following” ticked.
Don’t have the file? Get it in 5 taps
Every Instagram account owner can download their own follower lists. Ask for just this one category and the file stays small, usually well under 1 MB.
- 1
Open “Download your information”
In Instagram, go to Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information. The button below opens that page.
- 2
Choose “Some of your information”
Tap Download or transfer information. If you have more than one account, pick the Instagram account you want to check.
- 3
Tick only “Followers and following”
Leave everything else unticked. Photos, Reels and messages make the file much bigger and aren’t needed here.
- 4
Download to device · All time · JSON
Choose Download to device. Set the date range to All time and the format to JSON, not HTML.
- 5
Tap “Create files”
Instagram emails you when the file is ready. For this one category that’s often within 30 minutes, though it can take longer. Download the ZIP and drop it above.
Opens accountscenter.instagram.com. Sign in there if Instagram asks.
What the checker reads, and what it finds
Your export has a folder called followers_and_following. The checker opens four kinds of file from it: followers_1.json (plus followers_2.json and so on for large accounts), following.json, your pending follow requests and the accounts you recently unfollowed. Everything else stays unopened, including close friends, restricted accounts, photos and messages, so even a full export works. A full export just takes longer to load.
Comparing the two main lists gives you mutuals (you follow each other), accounts that don’t follow you back, and fans: people who follow you while you don’t follow them. Each name keeps the date from your file, so you can see when they followed you or when you followed them.
An export is a snapshot of the day Instagram created it. Follows after that day aren’t in it, and renamed or deactivated accounts can still appear. A single file also can’t tell you who unfollowed you in the past; for that you need two exports from different dates, or tracking that compares your account over time.
Have an older export as well? Add both under “Compare two exports” and the checker lines them up: who is gone from your followers, who started following you, who you stopped following and who you started following between the two. A name missing from the newer file isn’t proof of an unfollow, because accounts also get renamed, deactivated or removed by you, so the results say “gone”, not “unfollowed”.
Questions about your Instagram ZIP
Can my Instagram ZIP file show who unfollowed me?
Not on its own. One ZIP is a snapshot: it shows who doesn’t follow you back right now, with the date you followed each account. To see who left, add an older and a newer export under “Compare two exports”, or let tracking compare your account over time. The “recently unfollowed” file in your export lists accounts you unfollowed, not people who unfollowed you.
How do I compare two Instagram exports?
Open “Compare two exports” below the checker, then add an older export and a newer one from the same account, as ZIPs or as the JSON files inside them. Both are read on your device. You see who is gone from your followers, who started following you, who you stopped following and who you started following between the two. Request both the same way (All time, JSON) so missing data doesn’t look like a change.
Is my Instagram data uploaded anywhere?
No. The ZIP is opened in your browser, and only your follower lists are read: followers, following, pending follow requests and accounts you recently unfollowed. To confirm the file is yours, we look up the public follower counts for the username you type. If you unlock the full lists, the lists (never the ZIP) are kept in this browser for up to 7 days, for your account only, so they survive sign-in and checkout. Signing out or tapping clear removes them.
Which file do I need from Instagram?
You need the ZIP from “Download your information”, requested with only “Followers and following” ticked, the date range set to All time, and the format set to JSON. Inside it are followers_1.json (more numbered parts for large accounts), following.json and a few related lists.
It says my export is in HTML. What should I do?
Instagram offers two formats, and the checker reads JSON. Request the export again and choose JSON as the format. HTML files are meant for reading in a browser, so they’re skipped.
Why do you ask for my username?
The file doesn’t say which account it belongs to. We compare its follower and following totals with the live counts on your profile, which should be within about 10%. If they don’t match, perhaps because it’s an old export or someone else’s, we tell you before showing any results.
Does “doesn’t follow you back” mean they unfollowed me?
No. It means you follow the account and it isn’t in the followers list of this file. Some of those accounts never followed you. Known pending follow requests are left out of that list.
What’s free, and what needs Premium?
Your totals are free: followers, following, mutuals, accounts that don’t follow you back, and fans, plus how many accounts came and went when you compare two exports. So is one real name. Premium unlocks every name with its date, search, and CSV download, plus automatic tracking of your account.
Why doesn’t my export match today’s follower count?
An export shows your lists on the day Instagram prepared it. Changes after that day, a limited date range, or a missing followers part make the totals differ. Request an All time export and include every followers file for the closest match.
Can I check my ZIP file on my phone?
Yes. Tap the drop area to choose the ZIP. On iPhone it’s usually in Files → Downloads; on Android, in your Downloads folder. If your phone or computer already unzipped it, choose the JSON files from connections/followers_and_following instead, or drop the whole folder.
